Actually, I visited Doha in 2009 for an exhibition that was a complete waste of time. There isn't much to say about the city itself. The place was one big construction site and full with expats from India, Pakistan, Indonesia and Philippines..the Souks were nice..oh yeah, and it was veeerryy hot. It was clearly imitating Dubai with its skyscrappers but on the other hand it was very strange to see those big buildings from afar but when you got closer and you walked between those buildings they were like ghost-buildings, empty and the streets were practically still in construction too. I stayed at the Swiss-Belhotel and rooms were very spacious. The room I got was very clean, however when I read the comments on Trip Advisor people were not really happy about the hotel. I must say I did not have such a bad experience. I could enjoy the pool, food was okay. The location of the hotel was also quite good as it was near to the Souks, which is the only thing worth a visit in Doha, apart from the classical shopping malls.
